Best Water Pump for Sprinkler systems

Pumps are the most important components of a sprinkler system. In fact, it is the main reason why you are able to see the water flowing properly to your lawn.

Think about this: If there is no pump in your system, then all water will drain out into the soil without reaching the intended plants and lawns. That’s why we need to take a look at the topic which will help you in choosing the best one. This feature-packed and well-researched article should give you good information on buying an irrigation pump for your garden, farm, and lawn.

Lanchez 1.6 HP water pump

Portable Stainless Steel Water Transfer Draining Irrigation Pump with Pressure Gauge for Clean Water

There are tons of shallow well garden pump choices available out there. But how many of them will safely and reliably push water up a standard 25 ft deep well? I’m not sure that all that many do. This Lanchez HP pump does the job perfectly. As a matter of fact, it does so well that I was able to hook it up and move onto improving my landscape. Time is money in the garden! I wired this pump for 110 volts and used a grounded extension cord outdoors and ran it straight into my waterline via PVC pipe.

The thing about PEX piping is that it is flexible and the direction of the pipe isn’t critical. So, I really would recommend breaking out PEX for new installations if you plan to use a whole lot of pipe-like me in your garden or anywhere water transfer will be involved. Properly installed and sized, this pump should last forever with no service needed. We’ll see. But, there are the expected rubber gaskets that will need to be replaced from time to time.

And that’s all I can see to service this pump in the near term. The bearings on the impeller should also last a long, long time, but you never know when something might go wrong with metal parts no matter how solid they seem. I’m guessing that the impeller will ultimately need to be replaced. Given, this is a very small part of the overall pump in terms of cost, but it could prove time-consuming unless you can find or fabricate a replacement in your spare parts bin. There are other aftermarket pumps out there with more power (shallow well). But, this one is truly rated for a shallow well. And you can’t get that from the others.

Red Lion 97101501

The flow rate for this pump is 150 gallons per minute which ensure the sprinkler system will have an adequate supply of water to take care of all the lawns in a residential lot. This can also be used on commercial lots if necessary to provide plenty of water.

The power for the pump is provided by a motor that is half horsepower which assures the device will be able to run no matter what conditions are encountered at the job site. Powerful motors are not necessary because residential lots do not need water flowing through their system 24 hours a day, they only need it when it rains.

The device is self-priming which means it can deliver water if needed without having to be primed first by a separate tool. It can directly send water into the sprinkler system to provide irrigation, ensuring all lawns and gardens receive enough water despite not having to be primed. 2) Shut Off Valve Included. A shut-off valve is needed because the device needs to be turned on when water is not being used in order to prevent corrosion or damage from occurring to the pump. The shut-off valve allows the pump to turn on and off as needed so it can send water through the sprinkler system when needed and then turn off when it is not.

A shut-off valve is used to stop water flow in a sprinkler system while still keeping the pump running. This means that once the water supply for the sprinkler has been turned off, the pump will continue to run on its own so no damage occurs to the pump or pipework.

Cast-iron construction allows for this device to handle tough conditions without issue. This means that it can be placed in any area where there is a water supply nearby because it will not fail, regardless of what chemicals are in the water nearby. It can also withstand harsh conditions, unlike plastic models which can be easily damaged by the weather or chemicals. It is made of cast iron so it will not crack or break if dropped while installing or moving around the home.

The design of this model allows for water to be sent directly into the sprinkler system without needing to prime it first. This means that this pump can start right away when needed and it does not need to have any extra steps performed prior to use. It will always come primed, so installation is fast and simple as well.

The shut-off valve included with this model allows for the pump to remain running after the water has stopped flowing through the sprinkler system. This means that it is able to prevent corrosion or damage by turning on and off automatically so there are no issues with having a damaged pump when there is no water flow needed.

How Water Pumps Work?

A pump is a mechanical device that moves liquids or gases from one place to another by using the power of a motor. In general water pumps are divided into two main categories – centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, the difference between these two types is that pump design (impeller) determines how they work. For example, most domestic submersible pumps use centrifugal impellers whereas shallow well jet pumps almost always have positive displacement designs. Generally, positive displacement pumps are more efficient and powerful than centrifugal pumps.

The main parts of the water pump are:

  • Inlet
  • Piston
  • Outlet

The pump is connected to the water source via hose and outlet. The piston moves within the cylinder, bringing in more air and pushing out the water. Water moving into the cylinder pushes against the piston which serves as a seal for preventing air from escaping through the valve and being drawn back into the intake pipe.

The way the pump works is that when you turn on the switch or push button, the electric current goes to a motor in the base of the unit. The motor turns and causes a fan blade attached to it to spin as well. As it spins, this also spins the fan shroud around with it (enclosing the blades). This airflow draws more air into the unit through an inlet hole. The airflow enters a small cylinder that has another spinning fan inside of it, opposite from the first one. This second fan sucks air into the space between fans. At this point, two things could happen: if no liquid is being pumped, then both fans might stop and there would be no airflow, but if water is being pumped, then the first fan would continue to be spun and its blades will push air into a larger cylinder. This airflow pushes down on a piston inside of this second cylinder, pushing the liquid up through a tube to where you want it.

Types of water pumps

Submersible pumps

Submersible pumps are the most commonly used type of water pump in homes because they can also be referred to as sewage pumps, sump pumps, or foundation pumps. They usually operate between 1/4 to 1/3 horsepower and feature a casing with built-in sealed bearings that allow it to run dry. They are similar to centrifugal pumps, except that they have a sealed casing. Submersible pumps include impellers–which are submerged in the water being pumped–and feature molded-in cast iron or stainless steel bodies with corrosion-resistant materials used for shafts, seals, and bearings.

In order to provide lubrication for its moving parts, submersible pumps have a seal-less design. In this design, an impeller draws in water from the source and forces it through centrifugal impellers that are mounted on its outer perimeter. The centrifugal impellers spin around inside a stationary gear case to produce high-pressure hydraulic fluid or water that is then pumped to the discharge piping. The casing of the submersible pump must be installed below the lowest groundwater level and a backup system is highly recommended.

Centrifugal pumps

In the case of centrifugal pump impeller spins while the liquid is pumped, in this water does not move through the tiny holes within the pump it is only spinning with the pump itself, so this type of water pump is used for high-pressure applications like a cooling tower and boiler, etc.

Centrifugal pumps are not typically used for pumping water from shallow wells, nor are they usually chosen to pump large volumes of liquid. The main disadvantage of centrifugal pumps is that the more liquid has to be pushed through them, the harder the impeller has to spin. As a result, high-temperature applications demand high power and/or high-speed motors to turn the impellers, which increases the energy requirement.

In general centrifugal pumps have a higher flow rate than positive displacement water pumps. Nowadays most centrifugal pumps use “impeller” and “motor assembly” that combines into one rotating part of the pump, these types are called single-stage or split-case pumps.

booster pump

A water booster pump is one kind of pumping system capable of pumping up water from the lower level of the field to higher levels. This pump is also called a small capacity pump. A water booster pump is very suitable for domestic and industrial purposes pumping small water flows.

When the water pump is used, a simple motor-driven turbine located inside of a cylinder is rotated by the force of incoming flowing water. A rotor blade at the end of the turbine shaft converts rotational energy into mechanical energy to turn an enclosed impeller. The impeller pumps water into a discharge pipe to push water out from the pump.

Things to consider before buying sprinkler pump

1. Capacity:

It is critical to know how much water volume you need to move around in your system. The capacity of the pump can be determined by calculating the gallons per minute (gpm) a certain pump can produce. If you don’t want to go through complicated calculations, then simply take a look at the brochure or specification sheet that comes with each product.

Here is a simple trick that you can do: Divide the number of sprinkler heads in three sections (i.e. front, middle, and back garden) to get the daily water requirement of every section to determine how many gallons per minute your pump needs to deliver. It should be noted that usually, it has a larger capacity than what you need. So, it’s a good idea to choose a smaller pump with a smaller capacity over a big water pump that is not used fully or less than 50% of its maximum ability.

2. Features:

Looking at the features will help you in making an intelligent decision while choosing the right one for your sprinkler system. If you have a small yard where there are only several sprinkler heads and meters from a faucet, then purchasing an irrigation pump with such features is just overkill. On the other hand, if you have a large property to be irrigated by several sprinkler and drip lines spread around the whole area, then it is always better to purchase a high-end pump with some of the following features:

3. Motor Power:

It is also called horsepower or HP. This feature is important to determine how strong your water pump is, especially when there are more than one system being used for watering. It also determines the amount of energy needed to run it as well as how long the pump can sustain its ability to move the water without operating breakdowns.

4. Nozzles and Heads:

Among all types of sprinkler pumps, submersible ones are the one that moves most water compared to centrifugal and rotary pumps. This is because it uses relatively larger heads in order to cover a wide area compared to the other two.

One thing you need to check is the placement of nozzles that come with your pump, so you will know which part of the garden needs to be watered and how it’s been done. It is a good idea to put them in areas you need most water or where there is limited access as well as places with tall grass.

In case you will be doing regular maintenance on your system, then make sure that the sprinkler heads are removable and replaceable so you can easily clean them or check if there are any damages.

5. Efficiency:

The kWh/hour is a measurement of how efficient a pump is in terms of energy consumption. An irrigation pump with an energy factor of more than 1.0 is already considered as eco-friendly and environment friendly. However, this should not be a major consideration since it is usually offered by the large manufacturers in order to cater their clients’ needs.

6. Cost:

The cost of your pump will be determined by how much money you want to spend on it. It is highly recommended to purchase a high-end pump that has the features you need and can last for years to come instead of buying a low-end model that costs less but needs more replacements in the future.

7. Warranty:

A warranty is an assurance given by the manufacturer that your product will be replaced or fixed free of charge for a certain period of time. Normally, the longer the warranty, then the more you can expect from your pump’s quality and performance.

Sprinkler pumps are beneficial for most homeowners as well as business owners, especially if they have needs to irrigate large areas or their property is located a few meters away from the main water supply. It can be used not only with your sprinkler system but also with other irrigation devices, such as drip systems and soaker hoses.
