What Temperature is Too Cold to Water Lawn?

When the temperature is below 40°F (4°C), it’s too chilly to water grass. Grasses enter dormancy as temperatures drop closer to zero degrees Fahrenheit, requiring far less irrigation.

What Temperature is Too Cold to Water Lawn

When the temperature dips below freezing, grass goes into dormancy and requires far less water than it does while actively growing in hotter weather.

If you have any areas in your lawn that don’t receive water for long periods, such as shade or slopes, these may require additional watering when the temperature is low.

However, there are some exceptions to the rule:

  • If your lawn isn’t growing well due to low temperatures, you can still water
  • If it is very dry and sunny then you should also water.

Best time of day to water grass

The best time of day to water grass is early morning or late evening, as less of the actual sprinkler mist will be lost through evaporation – this means more moisture stays on the soil and therefore more goes into feeding your lawn; however it can make mowing difficult if done first thing in the morning.

When the temperature falls close to freezing, grass enters a state of dormancy and requires much less water than when it is actively growing in warmer weather.

If you have any areas in your lawn that don’t receive water for long periods, such as shade or slopes, these may require additional watering when the temperature is low.

Enjoy your lawn and if the temperatures drop, wait till they’re back up before putting out the sprinkler!
